NH Community Development Finance Authority / Incentives for Commercial and Non-Profits

  • Businesses, Non-profits, and Multi-family (3+ units)
  • Investments must be cash-flow positive

Pellet heating systems are exempt from property taxes in New Hampshire. Speak with your accountant.

Efficiency Maine

  • $3,000 grant towards equipment and installation
  • Eligible 1 to 4 unit residential buildings serving as principal residence for occupants, new or retrofit.
  • The system must include a bulk fill system that would provide continuous heat without human intervention for 2 weeks (estimated at 1 ton pellet capacity), or has a minimum 500 pound capacity fill bin and a permanently installed back-up heating system (propane, oil, natural gas) that automatically switches fuel sources and provides continuous central heat to the home using the same thermostatic control and heating distribution system as the pellet boiler if the biomass heating system runs out of pellets.
  • Recipient home must be heated by fossil fuel to qualify.

Grants total minimum of $6000 (and higher still in the Northeast Kingdom).

Residential installations

  • $3,000 towards equipment and installation
  • pellet boiler must reduce fossil fuel usage
  • fuel storage capacity sufficient to operate at least one week
  • Replacement or expansion of existing biomass systems and/or components (including cord wood boilers) do not qualify.
  • Replacement of existing electric heating systems do not qualify

  • fuel storage capacity sufficient to operate at least one week
  • Replacement or expansion of existing biomass systems and/or components (including cord wood boilers) do not qualify.

Vermont Energy Investment Corp’s Renewable Energy Resource Center

  • $3,000 per installed pellet boiler (or $1.25 per sq-ft heated space connected to the system)
  • System must include:
    a. Fuel storage capacity such that the system may continuously operate for a period of at least 14 days under peak load conditions;
    b. Automated fuel feed from a bulk storage container/area to the burn chamber in an integrated path;
    c. Automated on/off fuel feed control based on a demand for heat;
    d. Bulk fuel storage container systems must be able to receive automated bulk delivery of pellets

  • Available only in the 3 Northeast Kingdom counties – Essex, Orleans, and Caledonia
  • Grants use innovative approach to building acceptance of pellet central heating

Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (Mass CEC)

  • $10,000 to $14,500 base award (from 45% to 65% based on income)
  • +$2,000 provision for thermal storage
  • +$6,000 extra provision for the removal of an outdoor wood boiler
  • Bulk storage must hold between 3.0 and 5.0 tons
  • Grantees must buy pellets delivered in bulk
  • Energy audit is required (contact masssave.com)
  • Utility servicing the home must be one of the following: National Grid, NSTAR, Unitil, WMECO, or one of the following Municipal Lighting Plants: Ashburnham, Holden, Holyoke, Russell or Templeton.
  • Project Sites must be residential properties; new or existing single family homes or buildings with up to four units are eligible for this program.
  • Project Sites must be occupied year-round.

Small Pellet Boiler incentives (New York State Energy Research and Development Administration (NYSERDA))

  • Base award of 45% (up to $10,000 for units to 25kW, and $16,000 for units to 35kW)
  • Additional $5,000 for removal and destruction of indoor or outdoor wood boiler (or $2,000 for recycling of wood furnace)
  • Outdoor bulk pellet storage with minimum 3.5 ton capacity
  • Energy audit is required
  • Project sites can be residential or non-residential properties
  • Project Sites must be occupied year-round.
  • Thermal storage required (extra $2,000 provided for this)
  • Low interest financing options available through NYSERDA

Large Commercial Pellet Boiler incentives (New York State Energy Research and Development Administration (NYSERDA))

  • Base award of 40% (up to $200,000 for units with output over 88kW (300,000 BTU/H)
  • The incentive is for 45% of installed costs, with a cap of $270,000 for tandem pellet boilers with output over 300 MBtu/h (88kW).

Connecticut DOR / Property Tax Exemption

  • Lowers your property tax by subtracting the value of your pellet boiler equipment.
  • May not be available in all towns.
Exemption Details

“Good Deals for Good Neighbors” Outdoor Wood Boiler Replacement Incentives (CT Dep’t of Energy & Environmental Protection)

  • Pays $4,000 to remove or $7,000 to remove & replace an outdoor wood boiler.
  • Incentive is not currently active. Contact EcoHeat Solutions to be notified if program gets refunded.
